About Discover Knit and Crochet Classes
Following is an outline of the Discover courses being offered at Michaels stores. Specific class offerings and availability may vary by store. See your local store for a complete schedule. Each class is 2½- hours in length and includes a visit to the yarn department to discuss yarns and accessories to make your knitting and crocheting experience more enjoyable.
Discover teachers are students and graduates of the Craft Yarn Council’s Certified Instructors Program. Many have taught extensively, but all share a love of knitting and crocheting.
Each class listing explains what will be covered as well as any prerequisites for the class. Please check back regularly as class offerings will change.
Discover the KNIT Stitch
PREREQUISITES
- All you need before taking this class is an interest in learning to knit! Here’s where the fun begins.
Techniques to be taught are:
- Slip Knot & Cast on
- Garter stitch (Knit)
- Bind off
- Weave in ends
- Introduce pattern reading and gauge
- Yarn department visit
Discover the PURL Stitch
PREREQUISITES
- All you need to know before taking this class is: slip knot, knit stitch, casting on, and binding off! Knitting is all about just two stitches—knit and purl!
Techniques to be taught are:
- Review slip knot, cast on, knit stitch, bind off and weave in ends
- Purl stitch
- Changing yarn colors
- Reading patterns and gauge
- Yarn department visit
Discover PATTERN STITCHES
PREREQUISITES
- All you need to know before taking this class is: slip knot, knit stitch, purl stitch, casting on, and binding off! Wow, look what you can create by alternating and combining stitches!
Techniques to be taught are:
- Review of knit and purl stitches
- Stitch variations: Stockinette, Seed and Ribs
- Decrease
- Increase
- Reading patterns and gauge
- Yarn department visit
Discover CABLES
PREREQUISITES
- All you need to know before taking this class is: slip knot, knit stitch, purl stitch, casting on, and binding off. Cables: they’re all the fashion rage!
Techniques to be taught are:
- Basic principle of creating cables
- Introduction to cable stitch needles
- Right leaning cable
- Left leaning cable
- Gauge
- Yarn department visit

Discover BABY
PREREQUISITES
- For these projects, students should have a good working knowledge of knitting basics, including how to make a slip knot, casting on, the knit stitch and binding off.
Techniques to be taught are:
- Increasing
- Decreasing
- Joining seams
- Diagonal Knitting (Baby Blanket)
- Yarn department visit
Discover THROWS
PREREQUISITES
- This project requires time to complete but will be a treasured heirloom. Students should have a good working knowledge of knitting basics, including how to make a slip knot, casting on, the knit stitch, and binding off.
Techniques to be taught are:
- Diagonal knitting
- Mitered knitting
- Knitting stitches together
- Picking up stitches
- Reading a color chart
- Yarn department visit
Discover GIFTS
PREREQUISITES
- This project is for the confident knitter who has conquered knitting basics, including slip knot, casting on, knit stitch, binding off, and is comfortable knitting in the round.
Techniques to be taught are:
- Fair Isle knitting
- Changing yarn colors
- Reading a chart
- Yarn department visit

Discover instructors create their own 2½ hour class curriculum to assist students from Discover classes who still need assistance completing a project, to present a new technique or project, or to organize a class to answer specific knit/crochet questions.
Discover SINGLE CROCHET
PREREQUISITES
- All you need before taking this class is an interest in learning to crochet. Here’s where the fun begins!
Techniques to be taught are:
- Slip knot
- Foundation chain
- Single crochet
- Turning chain
- Reading instructions and gauge
- Yarn department visit
Discover the TALL STITCHES of CROCHET
PREREQUISITES
- All you need to know before taking this class is: slip knot, foundation chain, single crochet and turning chain. Add more yarn overs and see your work grow!
Techniques to be taught are:
- Review foundation chain
- Half double
- Double crochet
- Treble crochet
- Working into the front loop
- Working into the back loop
- Working between stitches
- Reading instructions, gauge
- Yarn department visit
Discover TEXTURED STITCHES
PREREQUISITES
- All you need to know before taking this class is: slip knot, foundation chain, single crochet and turning chain. Work magic with your hook as you discover clusters
Techniques to be taught are:
- Increase
- Decrease
- Cluster
- Shells
- Reading instructions and gauge
- Yarn department visit
Discover GRANNY SQUARES
PREREQUISITES
- All you need to know before taking this class is: slip knot, foundation chain, single crochet, turning chain and increase. Round and round you go!
Techniques to be taught are:
- Review stitches
- Motifs: crocheting in the round
- Slip stitch
- Changing yarn colors
- Reading instructions and gauge
- Yarn department visit

- Increasing
- Joining seams

Discover THROWS & WRAPS
PREREQUISITES
- These projects require a good working knowledge of crochet basics, including how to make a slip knot, foundation chain, single and double crochet. Students should be comfortable reading a crochet pattern.
Techniques to be taught are:
- Slip stitch
- Crocheting in the round (One-Piece Granny Throw)
- Working in the back loop of a stitch
- Changing yarn colors (One-Piece Granny Throw)
- Increasing
- Treble crochet (Openwork Wrap)
- Special stitches including picot shell (Openwork Wrap)
- Yarn department visit
Discover GIFTS
PREREQUISITES
- This project requires basic knowledge of how to crochet, including how to make a slip knot, foundation row, and single crochet.
Techniques to be taught are:
- Slip stitch
- Crocheting in the round
- Half double crochet
- Reverse single crochet
- Working in the back loop of a stitch
- Changing yarn colors
- Increasing
- Yarn department visit
